Lead Based Paint

MT2's coating/conversion technology (ECOBOND® LBP) is a low-cost and highly effective coating and lead treatment applied in a simple-to-use paint formula. The coating actually chemically stabilizes and converts the lead in Lead Based Paint (LBP), rather than only encapsulating it on the original media surface. This conversion process results in the treated materials passing stringent testing requirements such as the EPA RCRA TCLP. Using the ECOBOND® LBP coating results in non-hazardous end products from a wide variety of applications, including routine maintenance; facility renovation; and building renovation, demolition, and component removal.

Benefits of ECOBOND® LBP

ECOBOND® LBP offers long-term environmental protection while providing the most cost-effective solution to LBP maintenance, removal, and disposal issues:

• Provides for long-term stability of paint lead, limiting long-term liability.

• Treated material may typically be disposed of in a non-hazardous landfill.

• ECOBOND® LBP is non-flammable and inert to workers and the environment.

• ECOBOND® LBP retards lead pathways to air, soil, groundwater, surface water and workers.

Previous ECOBOND® LBP Treatment Results
ECOBOND® LBP treatment significantly reduces samples with high lead concentrations to below the EPA RCRA standard. MT2's technology benefit a number of agencies/clients including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Department of Transportation, steel storage tank farm operators, Brownfields developers, and other commercial/industrial facilities.

Standard application of MT2's ECOBOND® LBP technology involves a one- or two-pass roller or spray application onto the contaminated surface. The stabilization of lead, as defined by RCRA TCLP testing, is immediate upon surface contact and requires no chemical curing or set-up time beyond standard coating dry time. After application, LBP contaminated materials stabilized can typically be managed as nonhazardous material during and after demolition.

By stabilizing the contaminated materials with MT2's ECOBOND® LBP stabilization technology prior to characterization as a hazardous material, handling and disposal cost savings often exceed $200 per ton.

ECOBOND® LBP offers significant cost savings over standard abatement methods while meeting stringent regulatory requirements.

• Typically 50% less expensive than traditional methods.

• Easy application with conventional equipment such as paint rollers, hand sprayers or tankard trucks with spray bars means cost savings over specialized equipment.

• MT2's treatability laboratory and field support services optimize each ECOBOND LBP application to project-specific parameters.

ECOBOND® LBP Coating Available As Two Separate Products

ECOBOND® LBP is available in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon containers in the colors of basic white, beige and gray. The two products are:

1. Primer/Pre-Demo Interior and Exterior Coatings – can be applied as a pre-demolition coating on interior/exterior surfaces intended for near term demolition, avoiding the issues and costs associated with loose and peeling paint and the potential generation of hazardous LBP materials. Or, it can be applied as a long-term preventative maintenance coating, minimizing current and future environmental lead contamination issues and liability. Allows for application of a client-selected final overcoat as required.

2. Stripper – applied as a stripper for LBP surfaces resulting in LBP removal from surface and produces a non-hazardous residue, avoiding the issues and costs associated with generating hazardous LBP materials.
